Migrate Our Wordpress Permalink Structure
After our Google PageRank update, only the first level folder of our page get some page rank even though this shouldn’t be the case most of the time.
Of course we want more of our pages to get some PageRank. So it’s about time to restructure our wordpress permalink a bit and create more first level folder page link.
Our Existing Permalink
Our old permalink is optimize for Yahoo Search Engine by using:
/make-money-online/%postname/%postid/
Since Yahoo SERP have strong factors in the URL keyword, so it’s important to have “make money online” in our permalink URL, but after testing it, this URL didn’t particular bring much traffic compare to our other blog. So I guess we are back to focus on first level page rank optimization.
New Permalink:
/%postname-%postid
Why PostID?
The main reason we put this structure is we are not sure how Wordpress handle the same blog post name, will it create AUTO generate same post name unique permalink? Maybe some of you can enlighten us for this matter.
Anyway, we are a bit lazy to test out, so the best thing to do is just insert another post id in the URL to make it a unique URL even thought it’s have the same post name. The main thing here is … it’s still in the first level folder. So it’s should get some PageRank for our future blog post.
Tool You Need For Migrating Your Permalink Struture:
We use the deanlee permalink migrating plugin
The instruction should be simple enough to follow.
Just go to the permalink migrate to save/update your old permalink and change the new permalink in option->permalink
It’s fairly straight forward, and after the update, we didn’t even notice any different in our blog, it’s just WORK!
Thanks Dean for this wonderful Wordpress plugin. This really have make our life much easier compare to how we do this for our static website.

I experience the negative impact of permalink changes on my blog when I start blogging 3 month ago. Without reading and small knowledge about blogging, I make a changes to the permalink of my site - firstly I use the (/%year%/%monthnum%/%day%/%postname%/. After that I change it to /%postname-%postid as I read JohnChow much.
After the pretty change I make without the proper Permalink tool, some of my old post “gone”. Now I learn that if you want to change something please use some tool that can make it happen.
Wow, this is bad! I hope you do recover your traffic and search ranking after this change. If not, all your permalink and search traffic from the search engine will be gone!
Thanks for sharing here, dott-com. Your input will help the new blogger to use our recommend tool above to migrate to a better permalink structure in their wordpress.
Yup I manage to do something about that, a mistake that I never want to do again. Actually I use another plugin call redirection by Urban Giraffe. Maybe both plugin work same.
It’s good to hear that!
